A low transformer purchase price is easy to compare; the cost of losses depends on how the equipment will operate. Buyers can make efficiency a useful tender criterion by agreeing the evaluation method before quotations arrive. That method should connect supplier loss data with a realistic duty profile and transparent commercial assumptions.

Separate the Loss Figures

Request no-load and load-loss figures separately, together with reference conditions, tolerances, and the proposed test basis. Ask the design team to check that competing values describe equivalent duties. Numbers reported at different reference conditions should not be placed in a comparison sheet as though they were directly interchangeable.

IEC TS 60076-20:2017 describes alternative approaches to defining and evaluating transformer energy performance. Its public scope identifies agreement between purchaser and manufacturer, or applicable regulation, as the basis for selecting the method. Specify that basis instead of accepting an efficiency percentage without supporting conditions.

Use the Project's Operating Assumptions

Document expected energized hours, loading variations, evaluation period, and electricity-cost assumptions. Identify who supplies and approves each input. Where future occupancy or production is uncertain, compare a few clearly described scenarios rather than treating a single projected lifetime saving as guaranteed.

Keep the rating decision visible in the analysis. Additional capacity may support expansion or a defined contingency, but it should also be evaluated against the expected operating pattern. Compare the complete alternatives, including required accessories and installation implications, rather than optimizing one loss figure in isolation.

Keep Thermal Suitability Separate

IEC 60076-7:2018 addresses loading and thermal ageing for mineral-oil-immersed transformers. Energy evaluation and thermal suitability answer different questions. Ask the engineer to confirm both for the proposed application, including the site's ambient conditions, before treating a favorable energy comparison as sufficient grounds for selection.

  • Use one evaluation sheet with guaranteed losses and consistent reference conditions.

  • State the buyer's utilization and cost assumptions separately from supplier guarantees.

  • Agree how tolerances and any test-result deviations will be handled in acceptance.

  • Identify the evidence required for the delivered configuration, including routine test records.

Connect the Tender to Handover

Have bidders list departures from the required loss limits and evaluation method in one place. Resolve them during technical review so that the commercial ranking reflects the accepted equipment, not an earlier proposal. Preserve the selected data sheet and approval record with the purchase documents.
