A solar collection transformer connects inverter output to the project's medium-voltage network. A pad-mounted arrangement can place this interface near an inverter station, but the electrical duty differs from a simple purchase based on installed panel capacity. Buyers need the inverter configuration, operating requirements, and collection-system design before comparing transformer offers.
Start with the Inverter Interface
State the inverter AC voltage, collection voltage, frequency, required apparent power, and winding arrangement. Identify how many inverters connect to each transformer and whether separate windings are required. Have the project engineer review the neutral arrangement, earthing concept, and compatibility with the inverter manufacturer's requirements.
Supply the inverter's harmonic information and relevant operating characteristics for transformer design review. A generic harmonic label cannot replace application data. Ask the supplier to identify additional information needed to assess losses, heating, and insulation requirements, rather than assuming that an ordinary distribution design covers every inverter application.
Describe More Than Peak Generation
Document maximum generation, part-load operation, expected reactive-power duty, and any nighttime service requirement. Where storage or other operating modes are planned, describe the intended power-flow scenarios explicitly. Keep future options separate from functions required in the initial installation.
For mineral-oil-immersed units, IEC 60076-7 provides loading and thermal-ageing context. The engineering assessment still needs the actual site temperature, altitude, cooling arrangement, and duty profile. Request loss figures and their reference conditions so that energy performance can be compared using the same operating assumptions.
Coordinate Collection and Protection
Define radial or loop collection, cable interfaces, and the boundary between transformer and switchgear supply.
Assign ownership of fault studies, protection settings, surge-protection selection, and utility interface approvals.
List required measurements, alarm contacts, auxiliary power, and communications with the station control system.
Agree the transformer data needed by the inverter supplier and system-study team before design approval.
Release a Buildable Equipment Package
Review the location against cable routes, maintenance roads, drainage, flood exposure, fire requirements, and lifting access. Confirm the pad loads and cable openings using approved equipment drawings. The most convenient electrical location may still need adjustment for construction or future replacement.
Define the factory test records, site integration checks, installation instructions, and configuration documents required at handover. Commissioning should follow an approved plan implemented by qualified specialists. For a Nelink enquiry, include the inverter data sheet, single-line diagram, operating cases, collection cable schedule, and environmental conditions so that the transformer can be evaluated as part of the complete generation interface.
