Pad-Mounted Transformer Site Planning Checklist
Use this checklist to plan pad-mounted transformer location, foundation, cable routes, maintenance space, handling access, and equipment interfaces.

A pad-mounted transformer occupies more space than its cabinet footprint. Doors, cable connections, cooling, maintenance, and eventual replacement all influence the site layout. Procurement and civil design should therefore share an interface package early enough to prevent foundations or cable trenches from being built around an unsuitable preliminary drawing.
Start with an Approved Installation Envelope
Request the offered unit's outline drawing, door movement, cable entry areas, foundation requirements, and access clearances. Distinguish equipment dimensions from the complete installation envelope. Include external fittings and accessories that may project beyond the tank or change access to the connection compartments.
Clearances must follow the applicable project, utility, manufacturer, and local requirements. There is no useful universal distance that can be copied from an unrelated transformer data sheet. Have the responsible designers reconcile fire considerations, electrical working space, ventilation, and nearby building openings before the location is fixed.
Coordinate Cables and Civil Works
Provide the number, size, and entry direction of primary and secondary cables. The civil and electrical teams should check openings, ducts, cable bending space, termination access, and any earthing interfaces together. A change in cable quantity or connector arrangement can affect the pad even when the transformer rating stays the same.
Assign responsibility for soil assessment, foundation loads, anchorage, drainage, and flood-level review. For liquid-filled equipment, include the required fire and spill-control measures in the site design. Keep these requirements tied to the actual equipment and location, rather than assuming that a standard pad detail resolves every condition.
Plan Delivery and Replacement
Obtain shipping dimensions, delivery condition, weights, lifting information, and handling restrictions.
Check vehicle access, turning space, overhead obstructions, ground conditions, and the final positioning route with the handling contractor.
Reserve access for inspection and eventual replacement after fences, roads, and landscaping are complete.
Coordinate vehicle barriers and security measures without obstructing doors or required working space.
Control the Drawing Handover
Create a simple interface register naming the owner of each drawing and unresolved issue. Mark preliminary dimensions clearly and identify the approval milestone required before concrete work begins. When equipment details change, check their effect on ducts, foundations, access, and adjacent equipment before accepting the revision.
Qualified specialists should approve installation and lifting plans and carry out site electrical work.
