Replacing a fuel-based process with electrical equipment can change when a factory draws power and how long high demand continues. The purchasing decision reaches beyond the new machine to transformers, feeders, controls, and the supply connection. Start with the production schedule, then give the electrical designer a clear description of the intended operating duty.

Build a Load Profile, Not Just a Total

A connected-load list records equipment ratings but does not explain simultaneous operation. Ask process owners for normal shifts, startup periods, cleaning cycles, and seasonal variations. Identify loads that can be rescheduled and those that must run together to maintain output or process quality.

Separate measured demand from estimates for equipment not yet installed. State the basis for each estimate and identify which supplier data remains outstanding. This lets the design team test credible operating scenarios without treating every uncertain future load as a confirmed requirement on day one.

Review Duty and Environment Together

IEC 60076-7:2018 addresses loading, operating temperatures, and thermal ageing for mineral-oil-immersed transformers. Ask the engineer to review the proposed transformer for its actual application rather than relying on a generic spare-capacity allowance.

Obtain starting characteristics and power-quality information from process-equipment suppliers. Identify requirements for supporting controls and auxiliary supplies. Make Expansion a Defined Scenario

  • Record the initial installation and each credible later production phase separately.

  • Compare equipped spare capacity with provision for expansion, including their different costs and limitations.

Issue One Duty Description to Bidders

Include supply conditions, the agreed load profile, environmental data, continuity requirements, and expansion assumptions in the enquiry. Ask bidders to identify missing information and departures from the requested duty. Resolve those gaps before the design is released for manufacture.

Compare offers using consistent loss data, accessories, document requirements, and acceptance tests. Assign responsibility for system studies and site integration explicitly.
